Bulletin 2 / 2006
April-July

Iko Poran!!!

- It’s been a very busy year for us so far and we’ve had many great achievements already, that’s why we are only now sending our second bulletin for 2006:

- In the first six months of this year we’ve already had more volunteers working with us than we had in the whole of 2005;

We have started our operations in Salvador, creating a huge positive impact; see below for some of the achievements:

- In partnership with an ex-volunteer, David Heller, we bought and donated land to the Grupo Cultural Arte Consciente so that a Community Center can be built, giving the project an infrastructure to develop its activities. We also donated funds to commence construction which is already underway;

- We donated the materials and renovated the training center of the Grupo de Capoeira Angola do Acupe which had been destroyed in a fire 3 months ago;

- In partnership with the organization A Mulherada, we implemented an English course for their tourist guides in Pelourinho;

- We also implemented an English course for the youths of our partner organization Cipó;

- We are creating a photographic database of all the activities and shows of our partner organization Circo Picolino;

- We implemented various workshops to strengthen the sustainable tourism activities of Pousada Escola Jorge Amado that trains young people to become tourism professionals;

- Our network of partner organizations in Rio de Janeiro continues to grow and we are now also placing volunteers in Observatório de Favelas, DEVAS (Development of Community Projects) and the community crèche MIMI, all in the Maré community. We are also working in the Coroado community (AMAPOLO), the Julio Otoni community (in partnership with REDEH), and the Cia de Dança Fazendo Arte in the Pereira da Silva community, all in Santa Teresa. We are also working with the organization Mão na Bola, in Niterói; and with the organization CAMTRA (Casa da Mulher Trabalhadora), in the center of Rio de Janeiro;

- Thanks to volunteer donations we are constructing two classrooms for the organization Final Feliz, in Anchieta neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro;

- We started working with a new partner organization from Holland, Fair Ground Sessions and we’ve already received two photographers who, in partnership with Observatório de Favelas, are going to put on a photography exhibition in Holland, generating visibility and more funds for the project;

We had 315.000 hits on our web page in May and in June 2006;

- We were interviewed by the Portal do Voluntário. You can read the interview at: http://www.portaldovoluntario.org.br/site/pagina.php?idconteudo=933

- We were featured in the publication Global Finland. See the article at: http://global.finland.fi

- An ex-volunteer Ragnheiður Sturludóttir (ADA) from Iceland wrote an article about her unforgettable experience with our program. Read the article at: http://www.vilagvandor.hu
