The Health and Happiness Project - PSA, operates in the Amazon area since 1987, along the riverside extractives communities of the Amazon, Tapajós and Arapiuns rivers, in the rural area of the municipal districts of Santarém and Belterra - west of Pará State - PA. Nowadays, it is gradually expanding its work to new locations of the National Forest of Tapajós (FLONA) and Tapajós/Arapiuns Extractives Reserve (RESEX), tending approximately 22.600 beneficiaries.

With its headquarters in Santarém, PSA has an interdisciplinary staff composed of doctors, agronomists, communicators, artists, educators of many technical areas, who regularly visit the communities realizing programs of Community Organization; Health, Agronomy and Forest Production; Education & Culture; Gender; Children & Teenagers, Popular Communication and Participative Research.

The communities are formed mostly by Caboclos - Indian’s descendents - who possess virgin lands and produce only for subsistence. They live by hunting, craft fishing, forest product collecting, manioc plantation and regional farming.. Read more...

The Community Councils, elected by the own communities, monitors, evaluates and delineates the actions

The art, the playfulness and the communication are the main tools of education, participation and mobilization of PSA.

With the Mocoronga Popular Communication Network, youths' groups are qualified as reporters for the production of newspapers, videos and community radio programs in a permanent exchange of information and knowledge. The Gran Circus Mocorongo is among the main activities developed (Mocorongo is the denomination given to who is born in Santarém/PA).

Saúde and Alegria (Health and Happiness)

Starting from Santarém/ PA, the volunteers will take a boat trip to the riverside communities of the rivers Amazon, Tapajós and Arapiuns. The participants will be in direct contact with nature, they will take walks to igarapés (flooded areas), trails in the forest and observe the sunset in the river. They will participate in discussions about community organization, getting to know every day of the trip practical examples that were worked out in the visited places.

The volunteers will work integrated to the PSA staff in their trips on the rivers Amazon, Tapajós and Arapiuns.

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

The volunteers will be inserted in the sectorial nucleus that will evaluate their activities in agreement with the goals to be reached in each program. They will be appraised, among other, on the following aspects:

- Number and type of activities developed;
- Level of interest and direct pledge (dedication);
- Integration with the tended communities;
- Ecological behavior on all occasions (the volunteer will be subject to the conduct norms practiced by PSA);
- Integration with the other volunteers, employees, technical and attendance staff (PSA and Iko Poran);
- - Number of people tended with the activities done by the volunteers (% of increase compared with periods previous to the volunteers' participation);
- Improvement of the indicators that compose Human Development Index - HDI (health, education and income).

GROUP SIZE

This program will only take place with 6 Participants, one in each sectorial nucleus.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND TRANSFERS

An Iko Poran representative will welcome the volunteers at the airport of Santarém, on the first day of the program. Iko Poran is responsible for all costs of terrestrial and fluvial locomotion, accommodations, meals, insurance, adaptation of the volunteers to the planned activities, attendance and performance evaluation, as specified in the general conditions of participation.

The volunteers will travel by boat through the rivers Amazon, Tapajós and Arapiuns in the Amazonian Forest. They will visit the cablocos’ riverside communities tended by PSA. They will sleep in new hammocks that they can keep after the program, either on the boat or in the communities.

During the volunteers' permanence in the project, the meals will be prepared together with the other members of PSA. On all of the meals the food is simple and tasty. There will always be an Iko Poran representative accompanying the group.

PROGRAM FEE
 
Individual Price: US$ 1.234,07

The Programs must be scheduled and paid for 60 days before starting. Iko Poran incurs on substantial expenses for project preparation and purchase of the materials and/or supplies that will be used, besides the analysis of candidates' profiles seeking the elaboration of his/her Work Plan for the planned activities.

FREE TIME

The participants will be in direct contact with nature, in the Brazilian Amazon. They can take trails in the forest accompanied with children and observe the sunset in the river. They can participate community meetings, in some folk dances presentations and in presentations of the Health and Happiness Circus. They can also fish, enjoy the rivers, the beaches and relax in the sun.
