Volunteer projects in Ecuador
In addition to everyday family opportunities in town such as feeding animals, hand-milking cows, cultivating vegetables in the organic community farm and weeding gardens, working in the plant nursery, creating footpaths in the cloud forest, the community has several specialised farming volunteer opportunities.
Reforestation of the Cloud Forest
Volunteer in Ecuador in a project with a long lasting positive result. The community have been asked by the local government to plant and grow 20,000 trees to use for re-forestation work across the region. Alongside this, the community group have also come together and bought a piece of land, where they would like to plant coffee plants and trees to grow and use for re-forestation work in the area. Since the cloud forest and the trees within form a vital part of the life and work of the community, this reforestation project will make a big difference. The community would love volunteer assistance to contribute towards this important project and to the community for years to come.
Community Infrastructure Development
Through this project you can really change a lot on the community’s life conditions. Iko Poran volunteers should be creative and have a lot of energy since there is a wide range of projects they can help with: improving farm lands, improving housing conditions, building infrastructure, helping with community education, etc. You can leave you mark in the community. You really are the one to decide what you would live more – and believe us, they will be thankful forever!
Teaching English in Ecuador
When you choose to volunteer in Ecuador teaching English, you will have the chance to change individual path of life. Learning English will make it much easier for children and adults to work with tourists and also other volunteers. Many people in the community are interested, or already in the process of learning English. So you can offer them private or community lessons.
The local school is also open for you to teach the language and help with other educational subjects. Most of all, it is extremely important to give them attention and affection while teaching as this is what they need the most. We suggest Iko Poran volunteers to give lessons in a playful and interactive way; this will definitely make lessons more effective.
Volunteer at an Artisan Shop in Ecuador to help creating income for the local people. While you learn to make crafts and jewellery, you will learn about the culture and history of Ecuador. A catalyst for change in the community the “taller” was the first group to consciously create an environmentally sustainable source of income in the community, more than 10 years ago. Mariana and Renee now sell modern and traditional jewellery and crafts made from seeds and other materials that they sustainably grow and harvest in the cloud forest.
As an Iko Poran volunteer in Ecuador participant you will work in their shop and learn to make crafts and jewellery, as well as the history of reforestation efforts in the community, and the indigenous story of the Yumbo people. If you are an artsy, want to help a low-income community and be close to their culture, this is a perfect match for you to do all of this and be immersed in a new culture and language!
Many volunteers have developed special volunteer projects during their stay in this community. One volunteer learned to cook Ecuadorian cuisine with the town’s Chef Hermenia. When she returned to her country she held a benefit dinner featuring Ecuadorian cuisine. With the proceeds she bought a tank of water to the entire community and made a big positive impact in the lives of all inhabitants.
We are open to any new ideas and suggestions to utilise your special talents or interests.
