When asked, if she could summarize her experience with three words, she would say: “Incredible, unexpected and beautiful.” She enjoyed her trip to India from the beginning: at the airport pickup, the orientation, and the volunteer projects. She has been teaching English to children and met so many friendly people – they are unbelievable friendly, she says, and want us to discover the culture.

India – a short introduction.

With it’s vibrant colours, the unyielding craziness of life in the cities, India always has attracted travellers from all over the world. Since the Indian culture has strong spiritual roots, the sacred temples are fascinating. India not only gave birth to several religions, but also is the beating heart of Yoga practices worldwide. Since Dharmit faiths including Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism form a strong, living tradition, peace and wisdom are the essence of the Indian life and spirituality. But India not only stands out for it’s religions, the country historically gave birth to many geniusses in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. Recently, the scientific excellence extends to the fields of computer and software programming. India is internationally renowned for these future technologies.

India: an ethnically diverse country

Volunteers all painted with colors smiling together with some locals in traditional dressesSince India is home to roughly one-sixth of the world’s total population, India is the second most populous country, after China. Therefore, it remains one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. Apart from its many religions and sects, India is home to innumerable castes and tribes, as well as to more than a dozen major and hundreds of minor linguistic groups from several language families unrelated to one another. Earnest attempts have been made to instill a spirit of nationhood in so varied a population, and India has been blessed with several leaders of world stature, notably Mohandas K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who were able to galvanize the masses at home and bring prestige to India abroad.

India: A Dynamic Country with Economic Growth and Cultural Diversity

Contemporary India is increasing in physical prosperity and cultural dynamism; this can be seen are seen in its well-developed infrastructure and a highly diversified industrial base, in its pool of scientific and engineering personnel (one of the largest in the world), in the pace of its agricultural expansion, and in its rich and vibrant cultural exports of music, literature, and cinema. India has three of the most populous and cosmopolitan cities in the world—Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), and Delhi. Three other Indian cities—Bangalore (Bengaluru), Chennai (Madras), and Hyderabad—are among the world’s fastest-growing high-technology centres, and most of the world’s major information technology and software companies now have offices in India. All that being said the country’s population still remains largely rural and agricultural and faces continued domestic challenges and economic inequality.

Volunteer in India to Help Giving Equal Opportunities for the People Left Behind

The growth and development of this country is not equally balanced, and many sections of society are being left behind – in 2012, the Indian government stated 22% of its population is below its official poverty limit.

Volunteering in India with IKPVA gives you the opportunity to do your bit to help improve the lives of people living in underprivileged sects of society! See our range of projects to see how you can donate your time, skills and affection to the purpose of helping people less fortunate than yourself.

All the projects provide sustainable development opportunities to girls and women – mothers, grandmothers and daughters – through education and motivation. There are regular rallies and marches to help raise awareness among women about their rights & justice. Seminars are organized to raise voices against domestic violence, eve-teasing (cat-calling) & harassment. You can do counseling surveys as well, to serve the purpose of the programs. Construction and Beautification Volunteer in India

Volunteer in India with IKPVA working side by side with local to build and renovate important public venues.

The construction & beautification project runs in associated community buildings like government/private schools, hospitals, public gardens & other buildings, which requires renovation & beautification work. The project aims to maintain these public buildings and also to motivate the beneficiaries to come and join in the project in order to receive the benefits. For instance, you can work as a volunteer with the decoration of a community school. While the volunteers will beautify the school, painting fairy tales, numbers & other graphical illustrations on the walls, the children will start feeling attracted to the school and enjoy their lessons much more than before the renovation. Because some of the project sites are still unattractive for the residents, they don’t use those public facilities frequently, and so the community misses out. Therefore you will work to convert these old fashioned premises into new attractive and exciting premises for local children and community people.

On the working schedule of a construction voluneer:

  • Observation of the community buildings
  • Assessing the necessary construction & renovation
  • Designing the most suitable murals and decorations, eg: educational drawings
  • White wash entire selected premises
  • Maintenance of the buildings
  • Small level construction work like seating tables for children
  • Boundary wall paintings with motivational slogans
  • Making illustrations of World map etc.
  • Drawings of fairy tales in smaller section classes – Tables, body limb names etc in middle level classes
  • Construction of community toilets in rural areas for women & girls
  • Construction & renovation of previously built toilets & bathrooms for community people
  • Repair & maintenance in slum houses
  • Drainage building & maintenance work in rural areas & slums of India.

Working in this project you will get to leave your mark and improve the living conditions of people in some of the poorest areas of the city.
