Come volunteer at Project Capoeira Cidadã and learn the rich history and practices of this Brazilian martial art!
The project runs throughout the year, with both morning and afternoon shifts, for students ranging from 7-21 years old most of which are residents of the favela Cidade de Deus and nearby communities. Classes are taught by various members of these communities lovers of Capoeira and Brazilian popular culture. Activities include cultural exhibitions, seminars, and lectures on issues ranging from health education to social and moral issues. The children also have access to a library/IT center and learn the artistic process of producing the instruments used in capoeira. You can participate in all of these activities.
Children from the poorest communities often suffer from a lack of incentive and the absence of a formal structure in which to evolve. We believe, that if well assisted and with the help of volunteers willing to spend time and share skills and their culture, the children and the art of capoeira will be able to grow and to represent a new Brazil.
You DO NOTneed any special skills for this project; you also can learn the practice of Capoiera whilst sharing your skill set with the children!
