The Monteiro de Carvalho State School is a public school located in Santa Teresa that has become a model for the state of Rio de Janeiro for its emphasis on extra-curricular activities such as martial arts, soccer, volleyball, hydro-gymnastics, and crafts. The students' families are also integrated in the educational process through health promotion initiatives, sports and other recreational activities. They have over 800 students ranging in ages from 17 to 25.
