Medical Volunteer Experiences
Magda Camaxide: “I was able to exchange experiences and knowledge” – Nepal
Magda Camaxide volunteering at the Kathmandu Pediatric Hospital
During my 3 week stay in Nepal I was very fortunate to be welcomed in a host nepalese family that not only demonstrated utmost kindness and generosity to me and my boyfriend, but also with whom I was able to learn about many customs and their meanings, cultural inheritance, frustrations and dreams in the heart of Kathmandu. I thank them for having enriched my experience in countless ways.
At the hospital I was able to exchange experiences and knowledge that was beneficial to both sides and was also extremely well integrated in the hospital routines. Thank You Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center for this opportunity!!! – Magda Camaxide, Portugal
Ana Norleyne: “Freedom to help in your own ways” – Brazil
Ana Norleyne
Volunteering with Iko Poran is definitely one of the most amazing experience I ever had. The organization gives you the freedom to help in your own ways.
Working with kids was certainly a challenge but the support of other volunteers and people in charge of the projects make everything so much easier.
I also volunteered in a health project where people from the communities work together to inform people about important health issues. – Ana Norleyne – University of Texas
Medical Internship at a Small Hospital in Surin, Thailand
Medical volunteers in Thailand
Work as a medical volunteer in Thailand at a small community hospital, comparable in size to most western clinics. Since it is situated in one of Thailand’s poorest provinces, your work as a medical volunteer is vey important.
Since the clinic is responsible for maintaining the health and wellbeing of the local village community, you will partake in healthcare for the local people. From the 7000 people living at this communit, a majority are from underprivileged backgrounds.
Your duties and responsibilities are subject to your competency and formal experience. Volunteers with formal medical experience will have the opportunity to practice non-intrusive care under the supervision of the Thai medical team.
The aim of this program is not intervention or bringing about major changes to the Thai medical system, but to build awareness of the complex healthcare issues of rural Thai communities and provide some support to the local staff in their work.

Thus, it is imperative that these organizations are staffed with dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers to execute essential health activities.
Medical volunteers may have the opportunity to assist clinics and hospitals but they will not be allowed to partake in serious procedures.
