Like many countries in the developing world, Thailand has a large number of abandoned children across the country. Many of the children, for a variety of reasons have been left to fend for themselves.
Child Care Volunteer at a Local Temple Childcare Centre
You will start your volunteer work at a local temple childcare centre in Surin that provides support to a poor, rural community, by allowing parents and family members to go to work during the day to earn a living. When you dedicate your time for the children and show your affection, the children will feel well kept after. Moreover, the local staff will greatly appreciate your support, because they our somtimes overworked.

Whilst childcare volunteering in Thailand you will gain awareness and a deeper understanding of the local community and rural life. Moreover, as a childcare volunteer you will make a difference to the lives of these children. You will work alongside local staff in a combined childcare centre and school. When you give the children the extra support and attention that so many are deprived of, you will have a rewarding experience. This is a great opportunity for cultural exchange. We believe, you will have a lot of fun with the children and eventually meet some incredible people.
Start Dates & Duration
Our volunteer programs in Thailand usually start on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month.
Available from 1 to 12 weeks.
Arrival airport: Bangkok international airport, Suvarnabhumi – BKK.
Surin, in the Northeast, is often called the heart of Thailand; well known for its beautiful scenery and friendly local community. Sanghklaburi, in the Northwest of Thailand – on the border with Burma, is surrounded by stunning lakes, rolling mountains and dense rainforest – provides ample opportunity for you outdoorsy types.
One of our guides will be at the airport to greet you (NOTE: we can only do pick ups from BKK airport – the main one) and take you to your guesthouse on the backpacker haven of Khao San Road, the meeting point is EXIT 1. Later that evening you will meet up with the rest of the your group to get to know each other more on your first night on Khao San Road.
On the second day after breakfast there will be an orientation meeting, giving you basic information on your program and all you need to know about how to be safe and have fun during your stay in Thailand. After orientation, the team will take you on a tour around some of the sights of Bangkok.
You will get to explore some of the city’s best landmarks such as the temple of the reclining Buddha, the Temple of Dawn, the Grand Palace and more. Note: the entry fee for the Grand Palace (500 THB) is not included.
On the third day the local team will organize the transfer to your program’s location which takes around 6-7 hours.
- The program fee is paid directly to the host organization.
- All of the projects incur a registration fee of US$ 199.00 on top of the program fee.

Iko Poran is an NGO based in a developing country. We are dedicated to helping you help others, at the lowest possible price. We are interested in making volunteering abroad more accessible so that more people can help do really important work.
Participants in our volunteer in Thailand programs normally find US$100 to be sufficient for weekly expenses in the country, including meals but please bring more if you intend to travel at weekends, explore the country more.
The program fee should be paid to the host country and it is due 30 days before the project start date.
Accommodation & Meals
Accommodation is provided for all programs. Please check the specific of your program to verify how much you should budget for food.
Please budget US$ 10-15 per day for simple meals whilst in Surin and more for socializing / trips away.
You must be at least 18 years old at the start of your volunteer placement.
All volunteers must have adequate volunteer travel insurance and are required to provide a criminal background check to Iko Poran prior to travelling.
Most projects do not have pre-requisites or specific requirements; however, we do ask that anyone wishing to participate in the medical programme has qualified, is studying towards or is serious about a career in healthcare.
Fluency in English is required in all the projects.
You will have a competent support and advice from the local team and project leaders. There will always be a member of the local team working with you at the projects. The local coordinators will give you all the information to have a safe and unforgettable experience.
