Addis Ababa: a magical place

As a volunteer in Ethiopia, you will discover the beauty of the city of Addis Ababa. Since its inception in the 19th century, Addis Ababa (አዲስአበባ) has always seemed like a magical portal, a gateway to another world. The city offers some tourist spot, with the Holy Trinity Cathedral or the Ethiopian National Museum. When visiting so many interesting places in Addis Ababa, you will have the opportunity to experience the memorable Ethiopian cuisine whose “sponera” bread, injera, is used in place of cutlery to clean several seasoned stews.

Africa’s first independent country

Ethiopia is not only Africa’s oldest independent country, but it is also the second-largest in terms of population. Apart from a five-year occupation by Mussolini’s Italy in 1935, it has never been colonized.

Since the country is the home of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church – one of the oldest Christian churches, it looks back over a unique cultural heritage. Ethiopia’s monarchy ended only in the coup of 1974.

Throughout the colonial period, Ethiopia served as a symbol of African independence, and then became a founder member of the United Nations. Nowadays, many international organizations in Africa have their base in Ethiopia.
