About Ghana in Depth

Ghana is a country located on the west coast of Africa – neighboring Cote d’Ivoire and Togo. It covers 238,533 square kilometers of the African continent.

Ghana was colonized by the British Empire that laid the foundations for the modern country.

The British started exploring Ghana’s rich resources, gold, timber, industrial diamonds, fish, rubber and even sold Ghanaians as slaves.

In 1957, Ghana finally freed itself from the colonial rule. As it was the first country in Africa to gain independence from the foreign colonial rule, it became a historical model for the Sub-Saharan Africa region. In today’s context, Ghana has become a modern-day constitutional democratic nation.

What about going on a trip to volunteer in Ghana with IKPVA? This is what Jeanette Warthon, from the USA, said about her volunteer program in Ghana: “Loved Ghana, the kids are great. Ghanaians are so friendly, every day was a new experience.”

Besides caring for children, you may teach English or even coach a young football team at school.

With great food, a tropical climate, fascinating culture, majestic mountains, and wonderful beaches, Ghana is perfect for your volunteer vacations!

Ghanaians enjoy a rather simple, but tasty cuisine. The majority of meals consist of thick, well-seasoned stews, usually accompanied by rice or boiled yams.

Stews come in a variety of flavors, the most popular being okra, fish, bean leaf (or other greens), forowe (a fishy tomato stew), palava sauce (spinach stew with either fish or chicken), and groundnut (peanut), one of the country’s national dishes. So, you will enjoy experiencing Ghana’s culture and cuisine.

You can volunteer in Ghana to coach boys and girls at school and you might even help them to find their own “Messi” to win in 2022.

In 2010, Ghana once again celebrated its glory as the only African team to progress from the group stage to the knock out phase at FIFA World Cup 2010. While they lost to Uruguay in the World Cup, soccer has become a huge sporting event in Ghana since. So, for all soccer enthusiasts, don’t forget to check them out!
