I would HIGHLY recommend this volunteer experience. I did lots of research going into this trying to find the most affordable program, and Iko Poran was definitely the most affordable. I was doing the same volunteer work as volunteers from all over the world, but I was paying much less money to do so.

Costa Rica Volunteer Trip Save the Sea Turtles

As a volunteer you will accompany local guides on 4-hour night patrols searching for nesting sea turtles. Since the patrols make part of an on-going scientific investigation, you will help to measure, tag and exanime the sea turtles for diseases. Meanwhile  you will help collecting the eggs and relocate them to the project’s guarded hatchery. Also, the presence of the people of the volunteer project on the beach helps preventing poachers from stealing the turtle eggs. Sometimes they even kill the turtles to sell the meat illegally. For the night patrols volunteers should be in good physical condition to walk 6 km of beach and back.

Beautiful Nights With a Full Moon

Some nights you will be soaked by heavy rains, other nights high tides will spray you. Also, be aware of the driftwood washed ashore, you may stumble over it in the dark. But there will also be beautiful nights with a full moon, stars twinkling in the sky and best of all nesting turtles.

During the day, you work schedule involves hatchery duty, beach cleaning and assisting in nest exhumations and release of hatchlings. There are also a lot of other environmental projects to help with around the village.
