Accounting for 8.8% of all children, there are 553,000 single and double orphans in Cambodia.

An estimated one-third of Cambodian children live below the poverty line, and their parents can’t afford adequate education. That’s why many families have turned to orphanages in hoping the orphanage could provide a better education for their own children. So the orphanages have become an important institution providing education for a better future not only for orphans, but also the children from families below the poverty line. Make a Difference: Childcare Volunteer in Cambodia

This project provides you as a childcare volunteer in Cambodia a chance to make a difference to such deprived children by helping them on a day-to-day basis. Your volunteer work schedule will include sanitation, learning, recreation and offering extracurricular activities such as drawing, painting, singing, and dancing.
The main objective of the childcare volunteer program is to bring mental, intellectual, physical and social improvement to the orphans.

From Albane’s Daily Schedule as a Childcare Volunteer in Cambodia at the Day Care Center

I took care of a class of 7 children (5-6 years old) from 9:00 a.m to 4 p.m, from Monday to Friday. Sometimes I picked them up in their shanty towns at 8 a.m with the staff. It was very hard and sad to see where they live and in such poor conditions, but it was part of the experience and I simply loved their face, their excitation when the association bus (that we used to pick them up at Home) arrived in front of their living place ( we can’t call it “a house”).

When they arrive at the day care center around 9 a.m, they sing and pray with a Kmer teacher. This was so cute to see them so happy to be there and to take pleasure to sing and pray (even if they lost sometimes their concentration rapidly when they saw the volunteers next to them and they guessed that they will play games after ahah).
After that, it was “shower time” for all children. So we had to make them take a shower, put soap on their body, shampoo on their haïr, and dress them up with the association “uniform” (too cute).

Then, I taught them English until lunch time (around 11 a.m). As school facilities, I had a board, some books, pens, and thats it. I regretted not to have brought with me school support for the class when I see how much they were happy to learn. Some days, when they were very excited, I had time to do some games (often drawings) after the lesson and before the lunch time. Participants in our Cambodia volunteer programs normally find US$ 50 to be sufficient for weekly expenses in the country.

The program fee should be paid to the host country and it is due 30 days before the project start date.

PHNOM PENH:

Guesthouse:

AVN Volunteer House has just renovated to be the most comfortable and convenience for the volunteer to stay where it just feel like their home. The house is located very close to the Russian Market and volunteer can walk just only around 5min.

The volunteer house has electricity, cool & hot water and Wi-Fi access. The bathroom is inside all rooms. Bedrooms are comprised of single beds and bunk beds with bedding provided. The house also has a dining area downstairs, a living room with TV & books, and a roof terrace to relax at free time. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers.

Host Family:

You will have your own room (most likely) or share a room with one other volunteer. The rooms are usually quite simple, the same way your host family lives: a bed and sheets, a fan and maybe a small cupboard to store your clothes. Some rooms might have a private bathroom while others share a bathroom.

Generally, Cambodians are very conscious about cleanliness.

The host family will provide you with three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you prefer to have lunch at work, it might be possible ask your host family to prepare a lunchbox for you.

Requirements for a childcare volunteer in Cambodia

No specific skill or qualification is required for a childcare volunteer in Cambodia for orphanage project, but volunteers with interest in social development of children and who love spending time with kids are appreciated.

You must be at least 18 years old at the start of your Volunteer in Cambodia placement.

All volunteers must have adequate volunteer travel insurance and are required to provide credentials depending on the chosen program.

Language Skills Required to Volunteer in Cambodia

Knowledge of intermediate English is a pre-requisite.

Safety

You will have a competent support and advices from the local team and project leaders. Someone will always be available in the case of any emergency. Please keep in mind that you are in a different country and should take some precautions to avoid exposing yourself to certain risks.

First, to take care of children who really need attention, kindness, affection. They were so happy to see that we really paid attention to them, we contragulated them.
